Zabalj

Zabalj municipality is situated in Vojvodina, and belongs to the South Backa District. The center of municipality is the city of Zabalj, which was inhabited since prehistoric times. Long before the establishment of Zabalj, there was a village Sablia.


Zabalj was first mentioned in 1514, as the fortress captured by Doze Djerdj. At the end of the eighteenth century, after the great flood (1784), the original settlement was moved to the bank of the River Tisa, where it stayed till present days.

The most important and for tourism most attractive natural factor of this region is hydrography. Area of Jegricka, Mrtva Tisa, and the River Tisa is hydrographically very interesting, diverse and attractive for tourists. Flora and vegetation of the area, its rarity and existence on very small surfaces, gives them strength and interesting attractions.

Cultural property of great importance:

- "Black cuprija" in Zabalj, where in January of 1942 the fascist occupier conducted mass murder of patriots from the municipality of Zabalj,
- Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Nikola
- Church of St. Arhidjakon Stefan in Gospodjinci
- Orthodox Church of Vaznesenje Gospodnje with iconostasis from the 1895th in Curug

- windmill from 1846.
