Subotica

Subotica municipality is located in the far north of Vojvodina, near the border with Hungary. Situated in the North Backa District and the center of the municipality is the city of Subotica. The oldest archaeological findings in the wider territory of Subotica originate from the shore of lake Ludas, as old as from the period of the last Ice Age.

In the immediate vicinity of the town are sites from the Neolithic period, Bronze Age, and Copper Age. A number of findings speak about the presence of Scythians, Dacians, Goths, Huns and Avars in the region. In written sources the name Subotica occurs relatively late in the form of Zabotka - in an official document which dates from 1391. There are few relevant data about the city at that time, except that it fell under the Szeged Sandzak in 1526.

In the eighteenth century, after the liberation from the Turks, the place was inhabited quickly, and in 1779 it was declared to be "Free Royal city" - Marijatereziopolis. In the nineteenth century the development of Subotica was accelerated, although in the 1831st the cholera epidemic killed many citizens. In the history of the labor movement and the National Liberation War contribution of this area was significant. Subotica was freed by the Subotica partisan detachment in 10th of October, 1944.
