Pirot

This small town is located in southern Serbia, near the border with Bulgaria. Pirot borders with four Serbian municipalities of Dimitrovgrad, Knjazevac, Bela Palanka and Babusnica. All around Pirot mountains rise, now rare examples of untouched nature. There are mountains Vlaska, Svrljig, Stara Planina and Suva Planina. But apart from these natural giant, Pirot boasts with waterways such as rivers Rasnicka, Nisava, Hermes, or Zavoj lake.


Pirot was created on the foundations of the ancient Roman settlement Tures, which in Latin means "tower", later influenced by Greek culture with the city named with exactly the same meaning, Pyrgos, albeit translated into Greek. Pirot is mentioned in the fourteenth century.

The most popular brand of the town of Pirot is rug, and major influence on the development of this ancient craft of production carpets had sheep because of the special quality of wool. Pirot's rug is truly unique product, and is different from the Persian because it is smooth on both sides, and his patterns are always in geometric shapes. Pirot is also famous for sheep cheese of excellent taste.

On the territory of Pirot is a large number of beautiful and highly visited resorts. There is a mountain lodge on the slopes of Stara Planina, where alpinists can conquer the highest peak of Serbia known as Midžor, which reaches for the clouds at a height of 2170 meters. Picnic place Vrelo, Temac in the canyon of the river Temsica popularly called ‘Little Colorado’, Sukovski monastery by the river Jerma, Poganovo picnic in the beautiful surroundings of the monastery of St. Jovan Krstitelj from the fourteenth century, and there is a picnic site at Lake Zavoj. All these resorts are very attractive for fishermen and for those who love the magic of wild nature.
