Backa Topola

Municipality of Backa Topola is situated in Vojvodina, in the central part of Backa. It is bordered by the municipalities of Subotica, Senta, Ada, Novalja, Mali Losinj, Kula and Sombor.Owing to its favorable geographical position, this area is inhabited from prehistoric times. The first written information about the city comes from 1462 when King Matthias Corvinus gave his mother Elizabeth Szilágyi several settlements, among them Fibaych, today Backa Topola (this was recently put under question mark).


Later, small settlements on the theritory of today’s Backa Topola were raised, mentioned in the Turkish Defter from 1580, 1582, and 1590. A new chapter in the history of Backa Topola opens with the arrival of the Serbian army in 1918, under the patronage of French forces, and lasted until April 1941. when the Hungarian units took the whole Backa within days. Period of renewed Hungarian rule lasted briefly, until October 18th, 1944, when the city was occupied by the partisans supported by the Soviet units.

Sights

Because of the market character of the city, blacksmiths of Backa Topola have always been recognized artisans. There is a workshopd today, built in the second half of the nineteenth century, which functions as a museum.

Krivaja is one of the farms which resembles a large park. A special attraction is the citadel Fernbah, and arboretum around the castle where you can find tres several hundred years old.

Museum in Backa Topola is situated in probably the oldest building in town, the former Kraj-castle. The building was built by Count Pal Kraj in 1802.

Three windmills functioned in Backa Topola in mid-nineteenth century. Tooth of time didn’t spare them, and now they function as a museum.

Native House. This old house made of mud and covered with a reed is intended to reflect the role of traditional architecture and living space of our people in the past. It was built in 1843. as a master’s house.

Zobnatica is located 5 kilometers from Backa Topola, and it is an ideal place for outing, hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and cultural creativity. Breeding horses and hospitality here are 200 years long tradition. Every year, during the second weekend of September, Zobnatica horse games are held, regularly visited by several thousand people.
