1.3. Knjazevac region - Knjazevac

Region of Knjazevac is situated around upper basin of river Timok and it is surrounded by mountains (Timok valley). It includes territory in municipalities Zajecar and Knjazevac, from 44° 10' geographic latitude on north to 43° 30' geographic latitude on south, with altitudes from 200 m to 600 m.

1.3. Knjaževački rejon - Knjaževac

Areas with vineyards mostly have altitude of 220 m to 400 m. Altitude gradually decreases going from north west and south west towards central and eastern parts of the region,  and it's mostly characterized by moderately - steep to mild slopes of the terrain covered by vineyards.

Region is characterized by different expositions of terrain. Vineyards are mostly situated on east, south,  and south east expositions,  but also on the top of the hills. Dominant type of soil of this region is vertisol, but there are also euteric cambisol and other types of soil, though less common.

Topographic - relief characteristics are: on the north of the region there's mountain Deli Jovan (1141 m), on north west side there are mountains Crni Vrh (1043 m) and Malinik (1158 m), on the south west of the region there are middle height mountains Rtanj (1565 m) and Tupiznica (1160 m), on the south there is low mountain Tresibaba (787 m). and on the south east are slopes of the mountain Stara Planina. Mountain ranges and slopes of these (the Rhodope and the Carpatho-Balkan) mountains and hills covering mostly north west and south west of the region, are intersected by river basins. East part of the region is less  hilly and with flat terrains.

To the north west part of the region there is mountain range with mostly mountain beech forests, forests of beech and fir, and forests of fir. These forests can have impact on wine production in the region

In central part of the region of Knjazevac rivers Crni Timok and Beli Timok merge, and make river Timok. River Timok flows through north east part of the region and its banks are traced by flood forests of red oak, ash, birch, and other.

On the north west, at the base of mountain Crni vrh, there is Bor lake. It is artificial lake made by raised dam and accumulation of waters from little rivers Valja Zoni, Marecova river, and part of the Zlot river watershed.
