There is an archaeological site of the Roman imperial palace with Roman Baths and an impressive floor mosaic, therefore Niš is still called the Imperial City. The fortress is the most beautiful and best preserved building from the seventeenth century Turkish period in the middle Balkans. It was built on the right bank of the Nišava river, in the place of former Roman military forts. It has a base of seven angles and five towers, and inside there is a Turkish bath and a powder magazine. Today a part of the Fortress is turned into galleries and modern restaurants. Skull Tower is a unique monument in the world that the Turks built from the skulls of Serbian rebels after the battle on Čegar Hill. Čegar is a monument near Niš. This place was in 1809 immortalized by the brave army commander Stevan Sinđelić. The monument to the Liberators of Niš was built in the center of Niš, in memory of struggle for liberation during the period of 1809-1918. Concentration Camp Red Cross, a memorial museum of 12th February is dedicated to the victims of World War II. A monument to King Aleksandar I Karađorđević was built in honor of his name and work, and Bubanj is a monument in memory of execution of patriots and national freedom fighters. Among interesting ambiental and individual buildings stands out the ambient of old town's Kazandžijsko sokače (Boilermaker alley) from the eighteenth century.
