Aleksandrovac

The municipality of Aleksandrovac is located in the central part of Serbia. Western parts of the territory of the municipality is repsesented by Dinara mountain system (mountains Goc, Zeljin and Kopaonik). The territory consists of two morphological units: Donja Zupa, and the mountainous hinterland of Gornja Zupa. Neighboring municipalities of Aleksandrovac are Brus, Krusevac, Trstenik, Vrnjacka Spa, Kraljevo and Raska.


Previous name for Aleksandrovac was Kozetin. The settlement developed on the narrow terraces of the Kozetin river, and Popovac stream that flows into the river Kozetina on the east side of the settlement. It is not known when the first settlement was created. In the area of Aleksandrovac objects from the fourth century BC were excavated. The oldest mention of Kozetin is found in the Endowement Charter of Stefan Nemanja given to the monastery Studenica in 1196. Kozetin was in 1882 given the name of Aleksandrovac by decree of King Milan, and at the request of the local population.

Culture:

  • There is a centuries-old tradition that celebrates the harvest of grapes as the peoples' holiday in Zupa. Every year in late September and early October there is a manifestation ‘Zupa vintage’. At that time the part of the pedestrian zone in the city center turns into a ‘wine street’, where the best winemakers of Zupa present their wine and products. In honor of the harvest a goddess of wine chosen, and from the fountain in the center of the city with is a cluster of sculptures wine pures, offered to visitors for free.
