1.6. Region of Nis - Nis

Region of Nis includes vineyard terrains located in the valley of the lower basin of the river Nisava, and lower basins of rivers Juzna Morava and Moravica, in the municipalities of Sokobanja, Aleksinac, Doljevac, City of Nis, and in the municipality of Svrljig.

Vineyards expand from 43° 41' geographic latitude on the north to 43° 13' geographic latitude on south, on altitudes from 150 m to 700 m. Areas where vineyards are grown are usually on altitudes from 200 m to 450 m, on south, south east, and east expositions.

Region is also characterized by medium steep to gentle slopes, where vineyards are grown. Vineyards in regions of Cegar and Svrljig are most often situated on hills or flats.

Predominant type of soil in the region is vertisol. There are aslo fluvisol and eutaric cambisol, and less often humofluvisol and semigley, calcocambisol and calcomelanosol, as well as soils in leaching, pseudogley and coluvium, etc..

Region belongs to hill and mountain belt. Topographic – relief characteristic of this region are as follows: mountain Ozren (1178 m) on north west side of the region, Svrljiske Planine on south east (1334 m), and Suva Planina (1810 m) (belonging to the Carpathian mountains), while mountain Jastrebac (1491 m) is located on the west side of the central part of this region (belonging to Rhodope mountains). Ranges and slopes of these mountains and hilly terrains found predominantly in east and south east part of the region are its most common characteristics. Terrain near rivers, in the area of Juzna Morava and Nisava, are gently hilly and flat.

Juzna Morava flows through the central part, while Nisava flows through the south part. In the area of these rivers there are misty,  flood forests of common oak,  red oak, ash, alder, poplar, and other trees. Nearby are also plots with arable crops and vegetables, as well as settlements.

Valley of Nis is part of the valley of Juzna Morava; it expands from Sicevo canon on the east to Morava valley on the west.

Valley of Soko spa is located in the north part of the region, where rich forests of oak, Turkey oak, red oak,  and other trees are. Landscape also consists of vegetable and fruit crops, as well as canon Bovanska Klisura.
